Building Campervans with Sustainability in Mind
As Earth Day reminds us each year, small changes can make a big difference.
At Out and About Campers, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword, but something we actively consider in every campervan conversion we build.
From the materials we choose to the way our campervans are designed and used, we’re always looking for ways to reduce environmental impact while helping people enjoy the freedom of van life.
Why Sustainability Matters in Van Life
Van life is often associated with freedom, adventure and a closer connection to nature – but it also comes with responsibility.
Traditional travel, especially frequent flying and hotel stays, can have a significant environmental footprint. Campervans offer an alternative: slower, more local travel that encourages people to explore what’s closer to home.
By making conscious choices in how campervans are built and used, we can help ensure that exploring the outdoors doesn’t come at the expense of the environment we’re enjoying.
How Our Builds Reduce Energy Use
One of the most effective ways to improve sustainability is simple: reduce how much energy you need in the first place.
That’s why we focus heavily on insulation and efficient design in our builds, including:
- Foil-backed closed cell foam to reflect heat and act as a moisture barrier
- Non-absorbent recycled bottle insulation to trap heat while repurposing waste materials
- Full carpeting to add an additional thermal layer and reduce heat loss
This combination helps regulate temperature inside the van, meaning there’s less reliance on diesel heating in colder months, reduced overall energy consumption and it’s a more comfortable living space all year round
We also use energy-efficient lighting such as dimmable LEDs and our electric systems help to minimise power usage.
Materials We Choose
Material choice plays a huge role in sustainability.
We use bamboo from UK Bamboo Supplies in our builds – a fast-growing, untapped resource that offers both durability and a modern finish. Compared to timber and plastic, bamboo has a much lower environmental impact.
Our insulation choices also matter. By using recycled insulation materials, such as fibres made from recycled bottles, we’re helping to give waste materials a second life while improving insulation.
Smarter Power
Energy independence is a big part of sustainable van life.
That’s why we offer solar panel systems as an option across our builds. Solar allows you to generate clean, renewable energy wherever you are – reducing reliance on campsite hookups or fossil fuels.
We pair this with lithium battery systems, which are:
- More efficient than traditional batteries
- Longer lasting
- Lighter in weight
Together, these systems make it easier to travel off-grid while keeping your environmental impact low.
Lower-Impact Travel
Sustainability isn’t just about how a van is built, it’s also about how it’s used.
We offer hybrid Ford Transit Custom base vehicles, helping to reduce emissions compared to standard diesel vans. It’s a practical step towards cleaner travel without compromising usability.
Campervans also naturally encourage staycations and local travel, reducing the need for flights and long-haul trips. Exploring the UK and nearby destinations can significantly lower your carbon footprint while still delivering incredible adventures.
Leave No Trace
Sustainable travel isn’t just about the vehicle, it’s also about how we behave.
We always encourage a “leave no trace” approach, helping to protect the landscapes we all love. This includes:
- Disposing of rubbish and waste water responsibly and using designated waste points
- Recycling wherever possible
- Avoiding single-use plastics and investing in reusable, durable everyday items
It also means being mindful of the products we use day-to-day. Choosing nature-friendly washing and cleaning products, such as those from Faith in Nature, helps reduce harmful chemicals entering waterways and ecosystems.
Built to Last
One of the most overlooked aspects of sustainability is longevity.
We believe in building campervans that are made to last. High-quality craftsmanship, durable materials and well-maintained base vehicles mean:
- Fewer replacements over time
- Less waste
- Better long-term value
A well-built campervan that lasts for years is far more sustainable than a cheaper alternative that needs frequent repairs or replacement.
Where We’re Heading Next
Sustainability is an ongoing journey, and we’re always looking at ways to improve.
Some of the areas we’re continuing to explore include:
- Expanding eco-friendly material options
- Increasing access to solar and off-grid systems
- Exploring new technology
- Continuing to refine our builds to improve efficiency even further
We know there’s always more to do, and we’re committed to doing better with every van we build.
Sustainable campervan design isn’t about one single feature – it’s about the bigger picture.
This Earth Day, it’s a reminder that how we travel matters and with the right approach, van life can be part of a more sustainable future.
