Campervan Heatwave Tips: How to Stay Cool, Comfortable & Powered Up This Summer

When a UK heatwave hits, there’s nothing better than escaping in your campervan and heading for the coast, countryside or your favourite campsite.

But high temperatures can make campervan travel uncomfortable if you’re not prepared.

At Out and About Campers, we want you to enjoy every summer adventure safely and comfortably. These practical campervan heatwave tips will help you stay cool, protect your power supply and make the most of off-grid camping.

1. Pre-Chill Your Fridge Before You Travel

One of the best things you can do before setting off is turn your campervan fridge on around 2–4 hours before departure. This allows the fridge to fully chill before loading it with food and drinks.

During this initial cooling phase, the fridge will draw the most power from the leisure battery. However, once you begin driving, the battery will recharge as you travel, meaning your fridge stays cold and efficient on the road.

Top fridge tips during a heatwave:

  • Keep fridge openings to a minimum
  • Organise food so you can grab items quickly
  • Avoid overfilling the fridge to allow air circulation

By reducing how often the fridge door is opened, you’ll preserve battery life and maintain a colder internal temperature.

2. Park in the Shade Whenever Possible

Direct sunlight can dramatically increase the temperature inside a campervan. When arriving at your campsite or parking spot, try to:

  • Park beneath trees (but don’t forget to check you can open your pop-top safely)
  • Position the van away from direct afternoon sun
  • Use natural shade from buildings or hedges

Even partial shade can make a huge difference to your comfort levels and reduce how hard your fridge and electrical systems need to work.

3. Use Your Wind-Out Awning for Extra Shelter

A wind-out awning is one of the most effective ways to create a cooler outdoor living space during hot weather.

Not only does it provide welcome shade, but it also:

  • Helps reduce heat entering the campervan
  • Gives you extra ventilation space
  • Creates a comfortable outdoor dining or seating area

Using your awning means you can spend more time outside instead of sitting in an overheated van.

4. Keep Your Vanshades Closed During Peak Heat

Many campervans are fitted with Vanshades, and they are incredibly useful during a heatwave.

Vanshades provide:

  • Light control
  • Added insulation
  • Reduced internal heat build-up

Their foil-backed design adds an extra layer of thermal insulation, helping keep your campervan cooler during the hottest parts of the day.

For best results, close Vanshades on windows exposed to direct sunlight and open them later in the evening once temperatures begin to drop.

5. Maximise Airflow Inside Your Campervan

Good airflow is essential during hot weather. To keep fresh air moving through your campervan:

  • Open windows safely when parked
  • Lift or unzip pop-tops
  • Create cross-ventilation by opening opposite sides of the van

Allowing hot air to escape will make sleeping and relaxing far more comfortable during warm summer nights.

6. Make the Most of Your Solar Panel

Summer sunshine is excellent news for campervan solar panels.

Your solar panel helps charge your leisure battery while off-grid, keeping your fridge, lights and onboard systems powered throughout your trip.

You can monitor solar charging via your campervan control panel. In strong sunlight, you’ll usually see a charging voltage of around 13.5V or higher, indicating the battery is actively charging.

Solar panel maintenance tips:

  • Keep the panel clean and free from dirt
  • Remove dust, leaves or bird droppings regularly
  • Clean gently using water and a soft cloth
  • Avoid parking in heavy shade for long periods if relying on solar charging

A clean panel will perform more efficiently and help maximise battery life during extended summer adventures.

A little preparation goes a long way when travelling during a heatwave. By managing your fridge efficiently, improving airflow, using shade wisely and making the most of your solar setup, you can enjoy a far more comfortable campervan experience this summer.
